One of the most common questions we get on the survey visit is "so what actually happens when you do the work?" Replacing a conservatory roof is genuinely quick — most are watertight by the end of day one — but understanding the day-by-day process up front means no surprises. Here's exactly what to expect on a typical conservatory roof replacement in Plymouth.

Before we start

Once you accept the quote, we book in a start date — typically 2–4 weeks away. We'll confirm the schedule a few days before, drop off any required materials, and submit the building notice to your local authority (Plymouth City Council, South Hams, Cornwall Council, etc.). See our pre-replacement checklist for the steps you can do yourself in the lead-up.

Day-by-day breakdown

Day 1 — strip and structure

  • Sheet up the inside of the conservatory and protect anything staying.
  • Remove the existing glass or polycarbonate roof panels and old ridge.
  • Inspect the existing wall plate and frames; strengthen if required.
  • Erect the new SupaLite engineered timber rafter structure.
  • Fit insulation, breathable membrane and battens.
  • Watertight by end of day. The conservatory is fully usable overnight even in heavy rain.

Day 2 — tiling and weatherproofing

  • Fix the slate-effect tiles in lapped courses.
  • Install ridge tiles, hip tiles and verge trims.
  • Fit lead flashing where the conservatory meets the house wall.
  • Re-set guttering and downpipes.
  • First building control inspection on completion of the external work.

Day 3 — internal frame and electrics

  • Fit internal plasterboard ceiling and any required noggins.
  • First-fix electrics for downlighters and any new switching.
  • Fit Velux roof windows if specified.

Days 4–5 — plastering

  • Tape and joint, then full skim coat of plaster on the ceiling.
  • Allow to dry properly between coats.
  • This is the dustiest stage — soft furnishings out, doors closed.

Days 6–7 — finishing

  • Mist coat and topcoat painting.
  • Second-fix electrics — downlighters, switches, any new sockets.
  • Final clean and snagging walk-through with you.
  • Final building control inspection and completion certificate issued.

Building control

We submit the building notice, manage the inspections and hand you the completion certificate at the end. See our deeper building regulations guide for what's involved.

After we leave

You get the building control completion certificate, the SupaLite 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, and our own workmanship guarantee — all in writing. Any small snags after the job? One call, we come back and sort it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a conservatory roof replacement take?

Most conservatories are watertight within a single day and fully finished — including the plastered ceiling and downlighters — within 5–7 working days. Larger Victorian and P-shape roofs can take 8–10 days.

Will I be able to use the rest of the house during the work?

Yes. Disruption is contained to the conservatory and the immediate access route. Power and water to the house are unaffected. Most customers carry on working from home throughout.

Do I need to move out furniture?

We sheet up and protect anything that stays, but the more you can move out, the cleaner the job runs. Soft furnishings and electronics are best removed for the plastering days.

What happens if it rains during the install?

We work year-round and plan around the weather. The old roof comes off and the new structure goes on the same day, so the conservatory is watertight by evening. Heavy rain occasionally pushes start time but rarely stops a job.

When do I pay?

We typically take a small deposit at order, a stage payment when the roof is watertight, and the balance on completion. No payment is requested before work has actually started.

Will building control come and inspect?

Yes — the local authority inspects at key stages. We submit the building notice, manage the inspections and hand you the completion certificate at the end of the job.
