Devon's Conservatory Roof Replacement Specialists
We're Southside Better Roofs, based on Plymouth's Barbican and serving homeowners right across Devon. Our core patch is South Devon — Plymouth, Plympton, Plymstock, Ivybridge and the South Hams — but we regularly travel to Tavistock, Yelverton, Newton Abbot, Totnes and the wider Dartmoor fringe for the right project.
Devon's climate makes a properly insulated conservatory roof essential. Coastal South Devon takes serious punishment from Atlantic-driven rain and salt air; the South Hams sees among the highest rainfall in the county; and the Dartmoor fringe combines high rainfall with significantly colder winters than the coast. After 20 years on a Devon property, almost every glass or polycarbonate conservatory roof is leaking, freezing or both.
We fit one system — the LABC-approved SupaLite warm roof — and we fit it well. Specialising in a single system means our crew is faster, cleaner and more predictable than installers who switch between brands. Most Devon projects are completed in 2–4 days regardless of where in the county we're working.
Why most older conservatory roofs stop working.
Almost every project we visit starts with the same set of complaints.
Too hot in summer
Glass and polycarbonate roofs trap solar heat and make the room unusable.
Too cold in winter
Poor insulation lets warmth escape and pushes up your heating bills.
Leaks & condensation
Aging seals and single-skin roofs let damp in and cause recurring leaks.
Loud during rain
Thin roof materials amplify noise so the room never feels settled.
Why Devon Conservatories Need Better Roofs
Devon's microclimates produce predictable patterns of conservatory failure:
- Coastal Devon (Plymouth, Plymstock, Torbay, the South Devon coast) — salt-laden air corrodes metal roof fittings; driving rain off the sea stresses seals; properties closer to the water see the most rapid degradation.
- South Hams (Ivybridge, Modbury, Kingsbridge, Yealmpton, Totnes) — among the highest rainfall in Devon; persistent damp drives seal failure and condensation problems.
- Dartmoor fringe (Tavistock, Yelverton, Princetown, Ivybridge moor side, Bovey Tracey) — combination of high rainfall, strong winds and significantly colder winters than coastal Devon. Polycarbonate roofs become unbearable in winter.
- Mid & East Devon (Newton Abbot, Exeter fringe) — older housing stock with bespoke conservatories; widespread 1990s estate housing now reaching end of life.
On top of the structural failures, every Devon homeowner we visit raises the same lifestyle problems: rain noise loud enough to drown out the TV, summer heat that makes the room unusable from June to September, winter chill that means the heating runs constantly with most of the warmth disappearing through the roof, and condensation that drips back down onto the windowsills. A warm roof solves all of these in one go.
A complete insulated warm-roof system.
Engineered to building-reg standards and finished beautifully inside and out.
What We Install on Devon Conservatories
We fit the SupaLite warm-roof system across every Devon project, with the spec adjusted for local conditions — coastal-spec fixings on coastal properties, high-insulation builds for Dartmoor-fringe exposure, and standard spec for sheltered inland sites.
- Free home survey at your Devon property — typically 45 minutes; we measure, photograph, check the existing frame and confirm Building Regs requirements with your local authority.
- Bespoke design to match your home — composite tile colour matched to your existing house roof.
- Lightweight insulated structure — U-values from 0.18 down to 0.15 W/m²K, depending on exposure.
- Internal plastered ceiling — flat, vaulted or coombed.
- Velux roof windows where wanted — daylight without losing thermal performance.
- Climate-appropriate fixings & flashing — coastal-spec for salt air, heavier-spec for Dartmoor wind exposure.
- Full Building Regulations sign-off — handled through your local authority on your behalf.
- 10-year insurance-backed workmanship guarantee — plus a 40-year manufacturer guarantee on the composite tiles.
Recent Devon project — illustrative example
Representative recent project, similar to the work we do across Devon: a 4m × 3.5m Victorian conservatory on a 1990s property near Tavistock, on the western Dartmoor fringe. Original 25mm polycarbonate roof, freezing through winter and unbearable in summer, with seal failures around the ridge bar.
- Conservatory shape: Victorian three-facet, 4m × 3.5m
- Old roof: 25mm bronze polycarbonate, original to the build
- New roof: SupaLite warm roof (high-spec build, 0.15 W/m²K), Britmet Tudor-brown composite, 2 × Velux roof windows, vaulted plastered ceiling with 8 LED downlights
- Install duration: 3 days, single crew, watertight overnight throughout
- Investment: from £6,000 inc. VAT and Building Regs
- Outcome: conservatory now usable through Tavistock winters; owners report it's now warmer than the rest of the house on winter mornings

Why our warm roof outperforms a traditional conservatory.
Frequently asked questions.
Which parts of Devon do you cover?+
We cover South Devon and the wider South Hams from our Plymouth Barbican base. Core area is Plymouth, Plympton, Plymstock, Ivybridge, Yealmpton, Modbury and the South Hams villages. We also regularly work in Tavistock, Yelverton, Newton Abbot, Totnes and across the Dartmoor fringe. For Torquay, Paignton and Brixham we'll travel for the right project — please contact us to confirm.
Is the price the same wherever you go in Devon?+
Pricing is the same across our core area (Plymouth, Plympton, Plymstock, Ivybridge, the South Hams). For longer journeys (Torbay, far East Devon) there may be a small distance contribution to cover travel, which we'll discuss honestly at quote stage. There's never a hidden travel charge added later.
How long does a typical Devon install take?+
Most projects are 2–4 days regardless of location. A 3m × 3m lean-to is typically 2 days; an Edwardian or Victorian 3.5m × 3.5m is 3 days; a larger P-shape or gable on the bigger plots is 4 days. One dedicated crew works continuously and your home stays watertight every night.
Will my Devon conservatory need Building Regs approval?+
Yes — almost all warm-roof replacements need Building Regulations sign-off because they change the thermal envelope. Devon has multiple local authorities (Plymouth City Council, South Hams District Council, West Devon Borough Council, Teignbridge District Council and others) and we handle the application, inspection and certificate through whichever council covers your address.
Do you spec differently for Dartmoor-fringe properties?+
Yes. For exposed properties on the Dartmoor fringe (Tavistock, Yelverton, Princetown side, the Ivybridge moor side) we'd usually specify the higher-insulation SupaLite build (U-values down to 0.15 W/m²K) and use heavier-spec lead flashing details. Devon's microclimates are real — a Tavistock property in winter is a very different proposition to a Plymouth Barbican one.
What about coastal Devon properties?+
For coastal-exposed properties (Plymouth Hoe, Plymstock waterside, Torbay, the South Devon coast) we use stainless and zinc-coated fixings throughout and detail the lead flashing for wind-driven salt-air rain. The SupaLite warm roof is built for these conditions; unlike glass and polycarbonate roofs it doesn't rely on perishable seals.
How quickly can you survey if I'm in mid Devon?+
For our core South Devon area, typically 3–7 working days. For mid Devon (Torbay, Newton Abbot, Totnes), we coordinate visits to keep travel efficient — usually 7–10 working days but sometimes sooner if we're already nearby. Surveys are free, take 45 minutes and come with no obligation.
Do you handle Devon's older period properties?+
Yes — we work on properties of every era. Devon has a particularly high proportion of older stone and cob properties, especially in the South Hams villages and Dartmoor fringe. We're experienced with bespoke conservatory shapes built against irregular walls and chase lead flashing properly into stonework rather than relying on silicone.
Why use a Plymouth-based firm rather than someone closer?+
We fit one system (SupaLite warm roof) and we fit it constantly across the South West — that specialism makes our installs faster, cleaner and more predictable than generalists. Many Devon homeowners tell us they tried local installers but were quoted longer install times, less complete inclusions or a wider patchwork of brands. Specialism beats proximity for a project this big.
What's the warranty on installs across Devon?+
The same 10-year insurance-backed workmanship guarantee plus a 40-year manufacturer guarantee on the composite tiles, regardless of where in Devon you are. Insurance-backed means the warranty stands even if we ever stopped trading.
