No pushy sales · Same-day reply · 10-year insurance-backed guarantee
A simple, considered approach.
What is a Conservatory Roof Replacement?
A conservatory roof replacement is exactly what it sounds like — the old glass or polycarbonate roof comes off, and a fully insulated, lightweight tiled roof goes on in its place. The frame, brickwork base and windows of your existing conservatory stay exactly where they are. Only the roof changes.
That single change transforms the room. A conservatory that's freezing in winter and unusable in summer becomes a warm, quiet, energy-efficient extra room — one you'll actually want to spend time in. At Southside Better Roofs, we're Plymouth's specialists for this work and we've replaced roofs on every shape and size of conservatory across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall.
Who is a roof replacement for?
If any of the following sound familiar, you're a good candidate: the conservatory gets so hot in summer you can't sit in it, you avoid it from October to March because it's freezing, the ceiling drips with condensation, you've had repeat leaks, or you've started to use it as a glorified storage room because it's not comfortable. A new insulated roof solves all of those at once.
Why most older conservatory roofs stop working.
Almost every project we visit starts with the same set of complaints.
Too hot in summer
Glass and polycarbonate roofs trap solar heat and make the room unusable.
Too cold in winter
Poor insulation lets warmth escape and pushes up your heating bills.
Leaks & condensation
Aging seals and single-skin roofs let damp in and cause recurring leaks.
Loud during rain
Thin roof materials amplify noise so the room never feels settled.
Why Replace Your Conservatory Roof?
Most conservatories in the South West reach a point where they're simply unusable for big chunks of the year. The cause is almost always the same: the original roof is the weak point in an otherwise solid structure. A polycarbonate roof might cost a fraction of a tiled roof, but it will perform like a fraction of one too.
- Trapped heat in summer that can push the room past 45°C — hotter than a parked car
- Heat loss in winter — a polycarbonate roof has a U-value around 3.0 W/m²K, roughly 20× worse than a modern house ceiling
- Persistent condensation on the inside of the roof when warm air meets the cold surface
- Leaks where rubber seals have perished, ridge bars have corroded, or polycarbonate has gone brittle in the UV
- Drumming rain noise that makes the room useless during a typical Plymouth downpour
- UV fading of carpets, sofas and curtains, often within a couple of summers
Patch repairs (re-sealing, re-bedding ridge bars, replacing single panels) buy you a year or two but rarely more. The materials are at the end of their life. A complete replacement solves every issue in one go and comes with a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee.

The System We Fit — SupaLite™
We're SupaLite specialists. Rather than dabbling in every brand on the market, we've chosen to focus on one LABC-approved warm-roof system and become genuinely expert at fitting it. That means cleaner installs, fewer surprises on site, and a finish you can rely on for decades.
Why SupaLite™
SupaLite is a lightweight, engineered tiled warm-roof system designed specifically for replacing existing conservatory roofs. It achieves U-values from 0.18 down to 0.15 W/m²K, fits onto your existing frame and base without modification in almost every case, and offers genuine flexibility on the internal ceiling — flat, vaulted or coombed depending on what suits the room.
What's in the spec
- Lightweight engineered roof structure — sized to your conservatory
- High-performance PIR insulation — U-value 0.18 W/m²K standard, 0.15 on premium spec

Benefits of a New Conservatory Roof
The change is dramatic — most customers tell us they wish they'd done it years earlier. The headline improvements:
- Year-round comfort — usable as a real room in January and August alike
- Significant heating bill reduction — heat stays in the room rather than escaping straight through the roof
- No more condensation, damp or mould — the cold internal surface is gone
- Quiet during heavy rain — sounds like a normal house ceiling, not a drum kit
- UV protection — no more faded carpets, sofas or curtains
- Looks like a genuine extension from outside — neighbours regularly assume you've had a brick extension built
- Adds value to your home — a usable insulated room is worth more than a glorified greenhouse, and Building Regs sign-off matters at sale time
We used the conservatory maybe twice a summer before — it was an oven. After the new roof we eat dinner in it most nights and it's warm enough for Christmas Day with the family. Honestly the best money we've spent on the house.

Why our warm roof outperforms a traditional conservatory.
Frequently asked questions.
How long does a conservatory roof replacement take?+
Most installations are completed within 2–4 days, depending on the size and complexity of your conservatory. A small lean-to is usually two days; a Victorian or P-shape typically three or four. We work as a single dedicated crew so the job runs continuously from start to finish, and your home stays watertight throughout — even overnight.
Do I need planning permission for a new conservatory roof?+
In the vast majority of cases, no. Replacing a conservatory roof on a like-for-like footprint is normally classed as permitted development. Building Regulations approval is usually needed because the thermal envelope changes — we handle the application, the building inspector's visits and the final certificate as part of the project.
Will my conservatory be warmer in winter?+
Yes, dramatically. A modern insulated tiled roof achieves a U-value as low as 0.15 W/m²K compared with 2.0–3.0 W/m²K for glass or polycarbonate — roughly 15–20× more thermally efficient. Most customers find a single radiator easily heats the room and many turn the heating down a notch overall.
How much does a conservatory roof replacement cost in Plymouth?+
All conservatory roof replacements start from £6,000 fully fitted, regardless of size or shape. Final cost depends on roof shape, tile finish, number of skylights and any internal finishing. Every quote is bespoke after a free home survey.
Will a new roof be heavier than my old one?+
No. The lightweight SupaLite warm roof system we fit typically weighs 30–35 kg/m² — often less than the original glass roof plus aluminium frame. Your existing conservatory frame and base will almost always cope without modification, which keeps cost and disruption down.
Will I lose natural light?+
A small amount, but most customers prefer the result. The harsh overhead glare disappears and is replaced with comfortable ambient daylight through your existing windows and doors. We can also fit Velux-style roof windows or glazed feature panels into the new roof — two skylights in a typical 3.5m × 3.5m roof keeps the room beautifully bright.
Which warm roof system do you fit?+
We fit the SupaLite™ warm roof system exclusively. SupaLite is LABC-approved, lightweight, and gives excellent flexibility on internal ceiling finish (flat, vaulted or coombed). We've chosen to specialise in SupaLite because focusing on one system means our crew installs it faster, cleaner and to a higher standard than installers who switch between brands.
Do you tidy up afterwards?+
Yes — a full clean-down is included on the final day. We remove the old roof and all packaging from site, sweep up, and walk you through the finished room. You're left with nothing to do except enjoy the new space.
What guarantee do I get?+
A 10-year insurance-backed guarantee on the installation, plus a 40-year manufacturer guarantee on the lightweight tiles. The IBG means your warranty is protected even in the unlikely event we ever cease trading.
Can you replace the roof on a conservatory you didn't build?+
Absolutely — and that's most of our work. We replace roofs on conservatories built by all the major UK installers (Anglian, Everest, local builders) and one-off bespoke designs. The free survey confirms the existing structure is suitable.
What about building control sign-off?+
Building Regulations approval is required for most conservatory roof replacements because the thermal envelope changes. We submit the application on your behalf, the local authority inspector visits during and after the install, and you receive the final completion certificate — important for selling your home later.
Do you serve areas outside Plymouth?+
Yes — we cover Plymouth, Plympton, Plymstock, Ivybridge, Saltash, the South Hams, Tavistock, Torpoint, Callington and across South Devon and South-East Cornwall. Travel is included in the quoted price.
